New Civilization
China
Project Type: Experimental / Residential Size: 10,000 sqm Year: 2016 Awards: Home 2122 Competition Second Prize For thousands of years, traditional Chinese communities have developed unique architectural forms and social structures that embody harmonious relationships suited to Asian cultural values. These systems fostered strong community bonds and balanced connections with nature. However, over the past two centuries, the rapid influx of Western civilization has significantly disrupted these traditions. Many time-honored residential patterns have ceased evolving and are gradually disappearing from daily life, eroding an important part of China’s architectural heritage. While industrialization and modern technology introduced by the West have successfully addressed the housing demands of growing cities, they need not replace the valuable traditions of social and environmental harmony. Western societies, for example, often evolved around fishing and maritime trade, fostering independence, whereas Asian societies were largely shaped by agriculture, cultivating interdependence and community cohesion. Looking ahead, the challenge is to merge the strengths of both worlds—integrating Chinese traditional architectural principles with industrialized production methods, sustainable technologies, and the benefits of modern information systems. Such an approach could reimagine future Chinese high-rise residences that honor cultural heritage while meeting the pressing housing needs of the next three decades of urbanization in mainland China.
